Summer 2015. During my year in Normandy, I put my nose in family stories. And there are many. I discover that of Gustave, a man whom I knew during my childhood but of whom I have only a vague memory. I then discovered the extraordinary journey of a man whose life is a true novel.

I start to think about the construction of a story around the life of this character, while I finish the production of the photographs and the novel Soft slopes , which will be released in June 2017. Fall 2018. I begin my documentary research on resistance networks during the German occupation, on the colonization of North Africa in the 1930s and 1940s, on the Algerian war and on the activities of the FLN in Paris .

Summer 2019. Still immersed in my research, I am starting a series of around twenty interviews with specialists and witnesses from the 1930s and 1960s. The raw material for my novel is accumulating.
Spring 2020. Like 67 million French people, I take advantage of the first confinement to start writing. On June 2, I write the last line of his first draft.
Spring 2021. One year after the first version, after 9 rewrites, the manuscript is ready and is announced by the Riveneuve publishing house. In parallel with the preparation of the launch with the publisher, I am starting to set up partnerships with Parisian high schools (Diderot, Jules Ferry) and with the association Citizenship Youth in Seine-Saint-Denis to organize discussions and workshops of writing around three themes: colonization, World War II and the Algerian war.

Fall 2021. The novel will be officially released in bookstores on September 16, several signatures and book fairs are scheduled for the following weeks and months.

La génèse du roman
Eté 2020. Nous sommes alors en pleine crise de Covid, avec ses confinements à répétition. Je poursuis mon enquête sur le fameux Gustave/Mustapha, le personnage principal du roman Mustapha s'en va-t-en guerre qui sortira un an plus tard. Dans ce roman, quelques scènes font apparaître des personnages secondaires... Andrée, Annette, Jean et Josette... L'évidence s'impose à moi. Il faudra que je leur consacre un autre roman. La raison est simple: si Mustapha s'en va-t-en guerre raconte l'histoire de ce cousin éloigné venu du Maroc, une autre histoire devra être couchée sur le papier. Celle de ma grand-mère Andrée et de son mari Maurice, celle de leurs enfants Josette et Jean...
2021, 2022... Pendant de longs mois, je me documente et commence à écrire. Je mène une enquête destinée à comprendre un secret de famille et qui m'amènera à déconstruire les mythes familiaux et les anecdotes que j'entends depuis mon enfance. Je construis une base de données monumentale en reconstruisant les profils de tous les résistants local appartenant au réseau Turma-Vengeance (archives de l'armée au château de Vincennes), les profils des personnages déportés (archives de l'armée à Caen), je fouille plusieurs fois les archives départementales d'Évreux, ainsi que les archives du Mémorial de la Shoah, celles de la Contemporaine...
Et puis je mène des interviews. Avec les derniers survivants de l'époque – certains sont décédés avant la parution de ce roman, comme mon père –, avec des historiens de renommée internationale. Je confronte les histoires, les versions, pour construire la mienne, celle qui me semblera la plus plausible. Je pense en particulier au rôle d'un personnage bien particulier, le dessinateur parlementaire Dukercy, très connu avant guerre, et dont les historiens ne savent absolument rien sur les 10 dernières années de sa vie. Six mois d'enquête pour comprendre ce seul personnage... et ses ambiguïtés.
Automne 2022. L'écriture proprement dite commence en octobre pour s'achever au printemps suivant. Le roman est un puzzle, basé sur de multiples archives et témoignages. Un travail passionnant à mener. Et très personnel aussi puisqu'il s'agit donc de l'histoire de ma famille, celle d'une dénonciation et de la déportation de plusieurs personnes vers les camps d'extermination.
Comme pour Mustapha s'en va-t-en guerre, j'opte pour une construction non chronologique, quoique moins éclatée:

Été 2023. Je me dépêche d'achever la première version du roman, alors en cours de réécriture. Je veux impérativement que mon père Jean – l'un des personnages majeurs de cette histoire – puisse lire le livre avant sa parution. Mon père est alors très malade. Un jour, j'ai pu lui apporter le manuscrit. Et avoir la satisfaction qu'il le lise. Il nous a quitté en janvier 2024.
Printemps 2024. En mars, la maison d'édition Riveneuve place ce nouveau roman sur son programme de la rentrée littéraire de septembre. Sa sortie officielle est prévue pour le 29 août.
